FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What can I purchase for my child using funding?
You are able to purchase items that support your child’s development including toys, children’s desk/chair, books, academic materials, and technology. You can also use funding for family and child counselling, transport to and from services, and parenting books and seminars. Check out the AFU website here for more details.

 2. How long does therapy take?
There’s no magic number amount of therapy – every child is different. Some parents find that their children no longer need therapy once their child goes to school; other parents want their child to receive support until they turn 19 years old.  It all depends on the level of support that someone might need; even low support needs kids benefit from check-ins from a trusted adult every once in a while.

3. What books would you recommend I read as a parent or service provider to learn more about how to help my child or client?

Here are some books that our staff have read, loved, and found very helpful: (note – this isn’t an ad or endorsement in any way)

Uniquely Human by Dr. Barry Prizant

The #ActuallyAutistic Guide to Advocacy by Jennifer Brunton and Jenna Gensic

The Science of Making Friends by Elizabeth Laugeson

The Educator’s Experience of Pathological Demand Avoidance by Laura Kerbey

4. What if I can’t afford therapy or our funding is limited?

This is a very common concern, especially for children who are over 6 years old. There are grants that you can apply for to receive additional funding. You can check out Variety Kids’ Fund , CKNW Kids’ Fund , and At-Home Program .
